- This calculator uses the following formula:
- Note that the standard liver volume is variable across populations and therefore it is not possible to define clear cut-off values without knowledge of the patient demographics. E.g. for a western adult population the following formula was proposed to estimate the expected(!) liver volume dependent on body habitus:
- Total liver volume = 191.8 + (18.51 x weight in kgs)
- It is also worth mentioning that the liver volume follows a circadian rhythm (-7.5 to + 3.2%) due to hydration, physical activity, and nutrition. The minimum volume is usually found at midday.
