Technical notes:
- Signal loss on OOP is only apparent if the degree of fatty infiltration is between approximately 10-50%.
- In case of >50% fatty infiltration the liver will appear paradoxically less hypointense in OOP than IP!
- The above calculator uses the following formula:
- [(Liver IP / Spleen IP) – (Liver OOP / Spleen OOP) ] / [(Liver IP / Spleen IP)] x 100
- If the signal intensity is >10% the diagnosis of fatty infiltration is confirmed
- During placement of regions of interest (ROI) make sure to avoid large vessels, organ boundaries, and any motion-related or other MRI artifacts.
